HMP Cardiff gets Royal visit

Our Royal Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, visited HMP Cardiff yesterday, touring the jail and speaking to staff, including recent Butler Trust Award Winner, Matt Hillard. The Princess spent almost 2 hours in the establishment, and briefly addressed staff in Visits before departing for her next engagement.

HRH visits HMP Pentonville

Last week, our Royal Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, visited HMP Pentonville, to meet recent Award Winners – Natalie Adams, Eve Brotzel, Ricardo Lafuente-Dyer, and Jose Aguiar – and their colleagues, in their places of work. HRH caught up with all four winners and toured the establishment, before addressing staff in the Centre.

Princess Royal presents 2022-23 Butler Trust Awards

The Butler Trust’s 36th Award Ceremony, hosted as on every previous occasion by HRH The Princess Royal, was held on 27th March, 2023. By gracious permission of His Majesty the King, we were once again back in the wonderful surroundings of St. James’s Palace in London, the senior Palace of the Sovereign – the first time (because of Covid) we had been able to hold the event there since 2019.

NATALIE ADAMS (HMP/YOI Pentonville)

AWARD WINNER 2022-23: Praised by the Governor for her “infectious enthusiasm” and ability to “get things done”, Natalie receives her Award for her exceptional work setting up the Drug Recovery Wing at HMP/YOI Pentonville, which has won widespread acclaim from colleagues and prisoners alike. [Her Award is supported by G4S Care and Rehabilitation Services.]

NIYI AKINSEYE (HMP Wandsworth)

AWARD WINNER 2022-23: Niyi’s Award is for the “inspirational determination and courage” he has shown, as an Officer at HMP Wandsworth, in developing and driving forward Together Against Racism, which has helped to tackle discrimination in the jail and is now being rolled out across the prison estate. [He also receives the POA Award for outstanding work by a Prison Officer.]

AWARD WINNER 2022-23: Rupert is granted an Award for his remarkable work, as Senior Public Health Lead in HMPPS, in helping to drive and shape the organisation’s response to Covid-19. His tireless efforts, skill, and professionalism throughout the pandemic “directly contributed to saving hundreds of lives”. [His Award is supported by Interventions Alliance.]

SEAN CORR (HMYOI Aylesbury)

AWARD WINNER 2022-23: Described in his nomination as “a wise silver fox”, and by his Governor as “the quiet backbone of Aylesbury”, Sean receives an Award for his outstanding service as a Prison Officer, and for the passion, skill, and dedication he has brought to all aspects of his role, over more than 30 years. [His Award is supported by Ingeus.]

RICHARD GRAHAM (Hydebank Wood College & Women’s Prison)

AWARD WINNER 2022-23: Richard’s Award is for his exceptional work as a Vocational Training Officer, teaching gardening and animal husbandry, at HMP/YOC Hydebank Wood –  “changing lives one at a time” through his caring and inspiring approach, and winning a top prize at the Balmoral Show along the way. [He also receives the Keith Bromley Award for Education & Skills Training.]

MARK GROGAN (HMP Wandsworth)

AWARD WINNER 2022-23: Mark’s Award is for the deep humanity, commitment, and exemplary jailcraft he has shown over three decades as an Officer and Custodial Manager at HMP Wandsworth, and for being, in the words of one colleague, “one of the greatest leaders I have ever had the privilege to work with”. [His Award is supported by Serco Justice and Immigration (UK&E).]
