40th Anniversary Award Ceremony

The Butler Trust held its 40th Anniversary Awards on 25th March 2025, once again in the wonderful surroundings of St James’s Palace. As on every previous occasion, the Ceremony was presided over by our Patron, HRH The Princess Royal; and on our special anniversary, HM The King came to speak to our Award Winners after the presentations, over afternoon tea.

HRH makes two visits inside a week

As Patron of the Butler Trust, HRH visited HMP Littlhey on 31 January and Heathrow IRC five days later, to tour the establishments and thank staff for their service.

BARBARA RANDALL (North East Probation)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Chloe’s Award is for her outstanding leadership as a Senior Probation Officer with South West Probation, and in particular for the support she gives to her team, both professionally and personally, helping them manage their caseloads and the challenges they face, and improving outcomes for all. [Chloe’s Award is supported by Ingeus.]

DANIEL DIAMOND (Youth Justice Agency, N Ireland)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Described as “one of the most genuine, kind, and caring individuals you will ever meet”, Daniel wins an Award for his unstinting dedication as a Youth Justice Worker in Northern Ireland, and for his unique ability to reach and inspire young people, changing countless lives for the better. [Daniel’s Award is supported by the Hanley Trust.]

IAN HARVEY (Stoke Heath Prison)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Ian, Industries Manager at HMP/YOI Stoke Heath, wins an Award for his exemplary leadership, tenacity and creativity in transforming the work and training opportunities in the jail, as well as the gardens, and now building a prison ’High Street’, complete with shops, a barbers, advice centre, and more. [Ian’s Award is supported by Serco Justice & Immigration.]

HUMPHREY AGBUKOR (London Probation)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Humphrey receives an Award, as a Probation Officer in London, for his unwavering commitment to rehabilitation, and dedication to changing the lives of the people in his care, as well as for the support and inspiration he provides to colleagues – he is “outstanding” and “a joy to have around”. [Humphrey’s Award is supported by Mitie Care & Custody.]

HARJIT SINGH GILL (Brinsford Prison)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Gill, as he is known, gets an Award for his inspirational work as a Horticultural Instructor at HMP/YOI Brinsford, transforming both the environment and the lives of the young people he employs, teaching them new skills, and helping them flourish and grow like the plants they tender – “he’s one in a million”. [Harjit also receives the Bromley Trust Award for education & skills training.]

GERRY BOWMAN (Gateshead Youth Justice Service)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Gerry’s Award is for his tireless professionalism as a Youth Justice Worker with Gateshead Youth Justice Service. His support for colleagues, and his commitment towards, and ability to engage with, young people and their families, is widely praised – as one young person puts it, “he’s the man”. [Gerry’s Award is supported by G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services.]

JONATHAN FIRTH (Swaleside Prison)

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Jonathan’s Award is for his exceptional work as an Officer, for over 30 years, at HMP Swaleside, and for his unparalleled skill and compassion in working with some of the most challenging individuals in the estate – he is, according to his Governor, “the perfect role model for both prisoners and staff”. [Jonathan also receives the POA Award for outstanding work by a Prison Officer.]

AWARD WINNER 2024-25: Kay receives an Award for her work as an Administrative Officer at HMP Leeds, and for her “exceptional” impact, in the words of the Governor, on the take up and delivery of staff training, achieved through her approachable manner, exemplary organisational skills, and ceaseless determination. [Kay’s Award is supported by Sodexo Government.]
