IMRAN KHAN (Heathrow IRC)

COMMENDEE 2025-26: Imran gets a Commendation for his role, as the centre’s electrician, in keeping Heathrow IRC operating over the last 20 years; for the pride he takes in his work; for his technical knowledge, proactive approach, and calmness under pressure; and for coming in, day or night, whenever needed.

This nomination was drawn up by Hamad Saeed – Head of Facilities, Heathrow IRC; and signed off by Sarah Mallender – Centre Director, Heathrow IRC.

Introduction

Imran Khan has worked as an electrician at Heathrow IRC since 2006. Over the years, he has played a key role in supporting the Facilities Management team and helping to keep the Centre running smoothly.

Reasons for the nomination

During my time at Heathrow IRC, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many dedicated individuals. But every now and then, you come across someone who quietly goes above and beyond—someone who doesn’t seek recognition, who takes pride in their work, and who consistently puts the needs of the center first. Imran Khan is one of those people.

Imran has been working at Heathrow IRC as an electrician since 2006. Over nearly two decades, he has become a cornerstone of the Facilities Management team. His depth of knowledge, calm approach under pressure, and unwavering commitment have had a huge impact on keeping the center safe, secure, and operational. He has always carried out his role with integrity and professionalism, never expecting anything in return.

What sets Imran apart is not just his technical skill, which is exceptional, but his attitude. He treats the center as if it were his own responsibility to protect. Whether it’s responding to an emergency late at night, resolving a sudden power issue, or stepping in at short notice to cover a gap, Imran does it without complaint. He understands the environment we work in and how important it is that every system runs as it should—because if something fails, the consequences are serious.

There have been countless occasions when Imran has come out during out-of-hours emergencies, often at personal inconvenience, simply because he knew we needed the help. He’s the kind of person you know you can rely on. Even in the most challenging situations, he remains focused and solution-driven. He doesn’t just fix the immediate issue—he looks at the wider problem and often comes up with smarter, long-term fixes that end up saving time, money, and repeated faults down the line.

One example that stands out is when a critical system failed late in the evening, putting a section of the center at risk. Imran was contacted while off-duty. Not only did he respond quickly, but he also brought the right tools, identified the root cause, and had the system running again within a few hours. Without his intervention, that issue could have escalated into a major disruption. This is just one of many similar occasions.

Imran is a true team player, respected by everyone who works with him—engineers, managers, contractors, and staff alike. He never looks for praise, but he deserves it. He represents what it means to be dedicated, reliable, and selfless in service.

It’s hard to capture everything Imran brings to this center in just 500 words. But if there’s one thing to take away, it’s that people like him are the reason the center runs as it does. I believe he is long overdue for recognition, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this nomination than Imran Khan.

Support for the nomination

As Deputy Director, I fully endorse this nomination for Imran. He has been an invaluable member of the facilities management team at Heathrow Immigration Removal Centre for many years, consistently demonstrating exceptional dedication, professionalism, and a commendable work ethic.

Imran’s contributions to our team have been nothing short of outstanding. His expertise in managing the various facilities and resolving technical issues for the benefit of staff and residents on a daily basis has significantly enhanced the efficiency and functionality of our centre. He approaches every task with unwavering commitment and a meticulous eye for detail, ensuring that even the smallest issues are addressed promptly and effectively.

In a custodial environment and in buildings aged 20+ years where unexpected challenges are the norm, Imran’s steady demeanor and problem-solving skills have proven to be indispensable. His proactive approach to identifying potential issues before they escalate has saved the Centre time and resources, and his innovative solutions have frequently set a new standard for excellence.

Imran is not only a skilled professional but also a team player who fosters a positive and collaborative work environment. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to his colleagues, share his knowledge, and contribute to the overall morale of the team. His positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond his duties make him a highly respected and well-liked member of our team.

In conclusion, Imran’s exceptional performance and contributions to the Heathrow Immigration Removal Centre and the safety, security and decency agenda within the Centre make him a deserving candidate for a Butler Trust Award.

Staff working within Facilities Management departments within custodial settings can very much be the unsung heroes of an establishment. Without FM operatives, my Centre simply would not run, and outcomes for my Residents (and staff) would be seriously impacted. Imran truly radiates sunshine wherever he goes, regardless of the time of day/night or the problem or situation in hand. He is always ready and willing to help anyone, whether this be Resident, stakeholder or a member of staff. He tackles any challenge with his usual can-do attitude and is an exemplary role model for others.
